Saddam’s War Crimes
  • Iran 1980-1988:  Use of poison gas against Iran;
    • Executed 1,000’s of Iranian prisoners as policy;
    • War left 150,000 to 340,000 Iraqis and 450,000 to 730,000 Iranians dead
  • Anfal Campaign (late 1980’s): Poison gas on cities; including Halabja 1988 where 5,000 Kurds, mostly civilians, were killed
  • Kuwait 1990-91: crimes against humanity, genocide as 1,000 Kuwaitis killed
  • Iraqi Kurds 1991: genocide of 30-60,000 rebels, destruction of over 3,000 Kurd villages

Saddam Sponsors Terror
  • 1993:  Iraqi Intelligence Service (IIS) directed plot to kill President Bush and Kuwaiti Emir with car bomb
  • Iraq shelters terrorist groups:
    • Mujahedin-e-Khalq Org. (MKO) responsible for killing several US military and civilian personnel
    • PLF led by Abu Abbas, who hijacked 1985 cruise ship Achille Lauro and murdered US citizen
    • Abu Nidal Org., int’l org that has carried out terrorism in 20 countries, killing or injuring 900 people
    • Each group has offices in Baghdad, receives training, logistical and financial aid from Iraqi government
  • Hussein offers $25K rewards to families of Palestinian homicide bombers as long as they killed themselves
  • Salman Pak training facility for hijacking planes, trains; planting explosives in cities; sabotage; assassinations
